When we talk about Calgary emergency dentistry, it is important to identify what constitutes a dental emergency. Our definition is simple: If it hurts, it's an emergency. Still, there are varying degrees of dental emergencies, and not all dental emergencies happen between normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Therefore, let us differentiate between dental emergency types and dental emergency urgency.

Broken Teeth

Displaced and fractured teeth are very common in dental emergencies. There are a number of ways and circumstances in which a tooth can fracture, chip, break, or become dislodged. For example, there are instances of trauma, such as sports trauma, where a tooth can be knocked out. Falling off of a bike, getting hit in the face with a hockey puck, or any number of other scenarios can all lead to a displaced or fractured tooth.

Emergency Dentist or Emergency Room?

For a chipped tooth or tooth fracture, you might take an Aleve and get to your dentist as soon as you can. If it is after hours, and your tooth has been dislodged, then you should find the tooth, put it in milk, and get to an ER ASAP to have a chance to save the tooth. If you wait until the next day, it will be too late, and the tooth will be lost.

Oral Infections

Certain oral infections, such as gingivitis and cold sores, require medical care, but they are not dental emergencies. However, if you notice sudden swelling around the jawline or under the mouth, you have a dental emergency, and you should get to an emergency dentist ASAP.

Emergency Dentist or Emergency Room?

If you are having difficulty breathing or swallowing, along with swelling, then you need to get to an emergency room right away! You might have a serious - even life-threatening - condition.

Dental Urgency

In addition to the different types of dental emergencies that exist, there is something that we call 'dental urgency.' For example, if you have a toothache or sudden sensitive teeth, then it may feel like an emergency, but the situation isn't as urgent as if you have a fractured or displaced tooth. A cavity is a serious situation that needs to be addressed, but it's not an emergency like an oral infection. Either way, if it hurts, it's an emergency to you, so we advise you to visit our Calgary emergency dental clinic ASAP. We specialize in Calgary emergency dentistry, and we can make the pain stop.
